About Project UBWELL

The University at Buffalo's Division of Student Affairs was awarded a $193,793 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to address suicidal and other harmful behaviors through a comprehensive prevention approach on the UB campuses.

The program that earned the three-year grant - Project UB WELL (Wellness Enhanced Living and Learning) - was developed by the division's Counseling Services and Wellness Education Services units, which are part of the holistic Student Wellness Team. Project UB WELL extends suicide prevention programs and training to campus and community constituencies including faculty, staff, students, parents, and local mental health services to help foster an environment of self-care, connectedness, and knowledge. Programs that are a part of Project UB Well include QPR training, which teaches individuals how to recognize mental health emergencies, and "Inside-Out" which is a public awareness program.

Additionally, UB professional staff (campus psychologists, social workers, and health educators) will receive training from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and psychiatrists from the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program in order to better identify student groups who are at risk for suicidal behavior and other mental illnesses.
